What is CLIP No Screening?

CLIP, which stands for Calling Line Identification Presentation, is the technical term for the feature we commonly know as Caller ID.

The "No Screening" part of the term refers to a special provisioning feature that can be enabled by a voice service provider. In a standard phone setup, the network automatically verifies and transmits the actual number of the line making the call. When CLIP No Screening is activated, the provider disables this verification process.

This allows a user or a phone system to manually set, or "present," a different phone number as the outbound Caller ID.

Why is this useful?

This functionality is essential for many businesses. For example, a company may want all outbound calls from various departments or individual agents to display the main corporate phone number. This ensures a professional and consistent appearance and makes sure that any return calls are directed to the company's main line or call queue, rather than an individual's direct extension.

Because this feature can be misused for malicious "spoofing," it is not a standard setting. Businesses must typically request it from their network provider and may need to provide a valid reason for its use.
