Mobile Application Management (MAM) refers to the software and policies used to manage and secure the specific corporate applications used on an employee's mobile device. Unlike Mobile Device Management (MDM), which controls the entire device, MAM focuses only on the applications that access company data.

This application-centric approach is a critical component of a broader Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) strategy, and it is particularly important in Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) environments.

Key functions of a MAM solution include:

  • Provisioning: Creating a secure, internal "app store" where employees can download company-approved applications.
  • Securing Corporate Data: Applying security policies directly to the business apps. This can include enforcing a separate PIN or biometric login to open the app, encrypting the data stored within it, and preventing users from copying sensitive information from a work app and pasting it into a personal one.
  • Selective Wiping: If an employee leaves the company or a device is lost, IT administrators can remotely wipe all corporate data from the managed applications without affecting any of the user's personal data, photos, or other apps on the device.

By containerizing corporate data at the application level, MAM allows businesses to provide employees with secure access to the tools they need while respecting their personal privacy and maintaining control over sensitive information.
