Mobile Device Management

Mobile Device Management (MDM) is a security technology that allows an organization's IT department to monitor, manage, and secure the mobile devices—such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops—that are used to access corporate data and networks.

As a core component of a company's broader Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) strategy, MDM software provides administrators with granular, device-level control. This enables them to enforce security policies and configure settings remotely, ensuring that all devices comply with corporate standards regardless of where they are.

Key functions of an MDM solution typically include the ability to:

  • Enforce Security Policies: Require strong passcodes, mandate data encryption, and restrict certain device features (like the camera or app store).
  • Configure Devices Remotely: Automatically set up Wi-Fi, VPN, and email profiles across all enrolled devices.
  • Deploy Applications: Push mandatory applications to devices and manage their updates.
  • Remote Lock and Wipe: If a device is lost or stolen, an administrator can remotely lock it or completely erase all data to prevent a security breach.

MDM is a more comprehensive and device-centric approach compared to Mobile Application Management (MAM). While MAM focuses on managing and securing only the corporate applications on a device, MDM applies policies and controls to the entire device itself.
