What is Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC)?

Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) is the seamless integration of an organization's traditional "fixed" communication lines (like office desk phones) with its "mobile" communication services (like smartphones). The primary goal of FMC is to create a single, unified communications identity for each user, allowing them to be reachable on one business phone number regardless of the device they use or their physical location.

While an individual consumer might rely exclusively on a mobile phone, the business world has different requirements. Customers expect to reach a company on a consistent business number, and employees often prefer not to use their personal mobile numbers for work-related calls or carry a second, company-issued mobile phone.

FMC addresses this challenge by treating an employee's smartphone as a native endpoint of the company's phone system. Through a dedicated mobile application, an employee's personal device can:

  • Make and receive calls using their business extension and phone number.
  • Display the official company number as the outbound Caller ID when making work calls.
  • Access core business phone system features like call transfers, corporate directories, and voicemail.

What was once considered a complex feature reserved for large enterprises is now a standard and essential component of modern cloud communication platforms. By unifying fixed and mobile technologies, FMC provides true mobility, enhances professional identity, and ensures employees can stay productive and connected from anywhere.
